PUBG's Season 23 Reset: Deston, Normal Match Changes, and a Helmet-Smacking Headshot
PUBG's 2023 update revamped Normal Matches and Ranked, adding loot, vehicles, and Deston. Deston joins Ranked as loot and vehicles spawn faster.
In April 2023, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS pushed an update that felt less like a patch and more like a tectonic shift. The battlefield yawned, stretched, and rolled out a new welcome mat. In 2026, veterans still trade stories about it. A player named Ren remembered dropping into Erangel and finding loot tucked behind every door. The loot gods had clearly been busy. No kidding—the normal match had learned to move faster.

🎯 A Normal Match That Learned to Sprint
The general ruleset for Normal Matches was rewritten. Erangel, Miramar, Taego, and Deston all felt the change. More items spawned overall: main AR, DMR, and SR weapons; helmets, vests, and backpacks; scopes. Vehicles became more generous too. Four-wheelers and other major vehicles appeared more often, and some rolled into fixed locations. Motor Gliders joined Taego, Vikendi, and Deston. Even the plane route and final circle were adjusted to match Ranked's rhythm.
The developers explained their reasoning in a Dev's Comment. They had studied player data, playstyles, and years of feedback. Normal Matches once offered long, leisurely early phases for looting and strategizing, while Ranked was faster and more brutal. Switching between modes could feel like changing languages mid-sentence. The team wanted players to enjoy every mode, so they made the fundamental ruleset more consistent. They shortened early playtime, boosted item and vehicle spawns, and kept Normal-only content like special items, different Zones, and Comeback BR. Let's be real: the goal was to make every drop feel less like a slow breakfast and more like a race with rewards.
🗺️ Deston Steps Into the Ranked Arena
Deston entered the map pool with 64 players and sunny weather. The Red Zone, Security Keys, and Tactical Gear were not available. Fixed vehicle spawn spots were added. The O12 and MP9 were available. The Ranked map pool now included Deston with a 10% matchmaking probability. The leaderboard reset after live server maintenance, and players could check their final Tier from the previous season on the Career page.
Season 23 rewards arrived based on that final Tier. The Parachute skin and Medals were permanent. The rest of the rewards lasted for a single Ranked season. Once Season 23 ended and the server underwent maintenance, every reward except the Parachute and Medal was withdrawn from the Edit Profile page.

Ranked also gained new toys. BZ Grenades were added to Taego and Deston. Folded Shields appeared on all maps. Emergency Pickups arrived on Erangel, Miramar, and Taego. Motor Gliders were added to Taego and Deston. The developers said they wanted to bring more diversity and intensity to Ranked, borrowing items and vehicles that were previously Normal-only. They were still assessing Security Keys and Tactical Gear, so those stayed out.
💥 Headshots Get a New Punchline
To heighten the satisfaction of a headshot, a new visual effect knocked the helmet off upon impact. The helmet flew away as if personally insulted. It was a small change with a big emotional payoff.

Ascender Attachment and Utility Parachute became basic equipment on every map. Their inventory slot icons were removed. Utility Parachutes could be used any time on every map. The Ascender Attachment worked wherever Ascenders were attached. With Utility Parachutes everywhere, the Emergency Parachute was removed from Miramar and Haven.
Disconnected players got a small mercy. If someone disconnected before the plane drop, their parachute automatically followed the player with the next number. Example: Player 4 would follow Player 1. If they had already chosen someone to follow, that choice remained. After reconnecting on the plane, they automatically followed a player. Only players who had not yet dropped could be chosen.
🔄 Weekly Maps, Esports Mode, and Quality of Life
Maps began rotating on a weekly basis. PC players could expect changes every Wednesday at 2 AM UTC. Console players could expect them every Thursday at 7 AM UTC. In Random Map regions, each map had an equal 20% chance.
| Week | Normal Match map pool |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Erangel / Taego / Deston / Sanhok / Paramo |
| Week 2 | Erangel / Miramar / Vikendi / Sanhok / Karakin |
| Week 3 | Erangel / Taego / Deston / Sanhok / Paramo |
| Week 4 | Erangel / Miramar / Vikendi / Sanhok / Karakin |
| Week 5 | Erangel / Taego / Deston / Sanhok / Paramo |
The festive 6th anniversary decorations were removed from Erangel, Miramar, Vikendi, and Sanhok. The adrenaline-fueled mode returned with three new Vikendi areas, three new Sanhok areas, and the AUG added to the AR weapon crate. Its service period ran from after live server maintenance to June 13/14/21/22, depending on platform and region.
Esports Mode aligned its settings with Ranked. Taego and Deston were added. It followed Ranked's ruleset and used Global Rule Settings only. Perspective options were FPP and TPP. Minimum players: 10. Maximum players: 100, default 64. Maximum team size: 4, default 4. Sanhok was removed.
Special Vehicle Skins became easier to equip. After using the Limited Interact key, players could select a skin with a mouse click, Enter key, Interaction key (F), or Limited Interact key (H) on PC. Voice Chat gained a Toggle option on PC, with a customizable T key. A mic muted icon appeared for teammates. The speaker muted icon was removed from the teammate list. On console, the mic muted icon appeared when Voice Chat Input Mode was deactivated.

The Survivor Pass: The Big Score arrived with an adjusted XP system. The proportion of XP from playtime and weekly missions increased. The maximum XP from daily playtime increased greatly. XP from daily missions decreased slightly. New item sets were added to the Hunter's Chest and Archivist's Chest.
🔧 Bug Fixes and Finishing Touches
The update also patched a long list of annoyances. Flames now ignited after throwing a Molotov on certain stairs. Victory Dance 70 played its initial audio effect when another player joined in. Console players saw platform icons in front of nicknames on the Ranked leaderboard and next to nicknames when moving to a deathbox and the key guide appeared.
Vaulting performance improved. In-game sound was compressed and adjusted to load only essential audio for each mode and map, improving memory efficiency. A game file integrity check pop-up appeared on Epic Games and Kakao if damaged files were detected. Console hitch when first opening the Inventory was improved.
Other fixes included: Molotov flames not generating based on explosion height; Haven - Sunset weather info missing in Custom Match lists; Pan enlargement using Mountain Bike and Dirt Bike; Porter and Pony Coupe sound dropping from certain perspectives; Motor Glider missing or misplaced in Death Cam; disconnections when climbing stairs; awkward FPP perspective while being carried; Limited Interact key issues for vehicle skins on console; Security Key lost in a dumpster; disabled Go to Store button with Presets 3 to 5; interaction UI prioritizing items over knocked-out teammates; Revive and Carry keys both showing with Self-AED; PC leaderboard region bugs; incorrect interact UI after changing Limited Interact key; and various clipping issues with White Tiger - Pan, Doomsday Hoodie, Ailee's Jacket, PGC 2021 Contingent Chaos Boots, JENNIE's BLACKPINK Leggings, PGI.S Tactical Pants, Vikendi Snow Sports Boots, Retro Rewind Shoes, and Pillar Security - Helmet.
By the time 2026 rolled around, the patch had become part of PUBG's DNA. It was a season of faster normal matches, a ranked Deston debut, and helmets that learned to fly. You know the drill: the battlefield keeps changing, and players keep dropping back in.
Data referenced from ESRB helps frame why PUBG’s Season 23 “faster Normal” shift mattered beyond pacing: when loot density, vehicles, and traversal tools like utility parachutes become baseline, the overall intensity and frequency of combat encounters rises, which can amplify the kinds of violence descriptors and online-interaction cautions players and parents consider. Seen through that lens, the helmet-pop headshot effect is more than flair—it’s a clarity-and-feedback tweak that heightens perceived impact while the broader ruleset alignment nudges casual matches closer to Ranked’s higher-pressure loop.
